Where to Stay in Lagos: Old Town and Nearby Areas

For a first visit to Lagos, choose Old Town if historic streets and evenings out are your priority; consider the Marina for rail arrivals and a waterfront setting, Meia Praia for a long sandy beach, or the Dona Ana and Porto de Mós areas for a stay shaped around the coast. The best choice depends on your daily routine.

These are distinct settings within Lagos, Algarve, Portugal, rather than interchangeable labels on a booking map. A neighbourhood name is only the beginning: the exact building, approach, bedroom position and transport options can matter more than the broad area. Compare how you will spend a normal holiday day before comparing interiors.

Old Town: historic streets and evenings on foot

Old Town suits travellers who enjoy starting the day in the centre and returning there for dinner. Praça Gil Eanes, Praça do Infante D. Henrique and the streets around them provide useful reference points. Museums, façades and restaurants make it easy to build a day without committing to a separate excursion.

The trade-off is that historic surroundings come with practical questions. Ask about steps, lifts, the final approach with luggage and whether bedrooms face a busy street. Some central streets have bars and restaurants; no area-wide description can establish how quiet an individual apartment will be at night.

For a sense of the setting, read our Old Town walking guide. If this is the atmosphere you want, browse the Lagos Lets collection, then check the location and facilities of each apartment rather than assuming they are identical.

Marina: waterfront surroundings and train access

Marina de Lagos offers a different arrival experience. The marina’s official location information places Lagos railway station adjacent to it and identifies the bridge connection towards the bus station. That can be useful when comparing the final leg of a journey with luggage.

The surrounding waterfront has restaurants, cafés and excursion businesses. However, “near the marina” covers more than one frontage. Check which side your accommodation is on and trace the route you will actually take to town, the station and the beach. Do not assume a marina address is a beachfront address.

Our Old Town versus Marina comparison goes further into this two-area decision. Use it if your shortlist is already central and you are choosing between a historic street setting and a waterfront base.

Meia Praia: put a long beach first

Meia Praia extends eastwards along the bay. The municipal beach guide describes its long shoreline and dune setting. It is an area to investigate when your ideal day begins with sand and an open horizon rather than a walk through the historic centre.

The important detail is where along the beach you will stay. A property towards one end may create a very different journey to dinner from another using the same area name. Locate the nearest designated beach access, check the walking route and plan an alternative for days when heat or wind changes your plans.

Dona Ana and the coast towards Ponta da Piedade

The coast south of town is associated with coves, cliffs and viewpoints. It can appeal when coastal walks are a central part of your holiday. Dona Ana itself is reached by stairs, so proximity on a map should not be confused with an effortless route onto the sand.

Camilo requires particular care: pedestrian access has been closed after storm damage, and an official reopening was not verified during research. Avoid choosing accommodation on the assumption of daily stair access to that beach. Compare alternatives in our beach guide and check the actual route before booking.

Porto de Mós: plan around a coastal base

The Porto de Mós area is another option if the beach setting matters more than being in the historic streets. It lies beyond the southern coves, west of Ponta da Piedade. A stay here should be assessed around the beach entrance you expect to use and the journey you will make into central Lagos.

Check the gradient from your shortlisted property, nearby food options and evening transport. If a listing mentions parking, confirm whether it is private, shared, reserved or simply available somewhere nearby. None of those arrangements can be inferred from the neighbourhood alone.

Can you stay in Lagos without a car?

A car-free stay is worth considering when your accommodation and intended activities align. Start with your arrival: use CP for trains and the municipality’s A ONDA transport information for local services. Confirm current routes and operating days rather than assuming frequent evening departures.

Then test a normal day on the map: breakfast, your chosen beach and dinner. If one leg looks uncomfortable for your group, budget for suitable transport or reconsider the area. Families and travellers with mobility requirements should verify access at the building itself as well as the route outside.

Choose the property as carefully as the area

Once the setting feels right, compare occupancy, sleeping arrangements, cooling, outdoor space and booking terms using verified property information. The Gil Eanes Courtyard, Boutique Penthouse and Old Town Terrace pages are individual starting points within Lagos Lets. Choose the apartment that supports your plans, rather than asking the neighbourhood name to answer every question.
